Veronica Mars
I actually saw a good new TV show! http://www.upn.com/shows/veronica_mars/index.phpVeronica Mars is about a previously popular high school girl whose life is turned upside-down when her best friend is murdered, her father’s career ruined and Veronica is a victim of date-rape.
Now she’s helping her dad as a private detective, and just trying to survive in a school complete with biker gangs and overprivileged rich bullies.
So what makes this show good? Well, Veronica is not just a goody two shoes. Think Chloe (they look remarkably similar) from Smallville and add an incredibly warped sense of personal justice. As we quickly discover, the nearly everbody in town is corrupt in some way, and Veronica’s uses her new-found sense of justice to pit various factions against one another. Oh yeah, the fact that everybody seems to be evil, or have something to hide makes it pretty enticing. The first two episodes have shown that the old style “gumshoe detective” show can work in the 21st century, even with the slightly cheesy voice-over narrative.
Only drawback to the show? It’s on UPN and I don’t get UPN in Toronto. Argghh! Apparently CTV is picking it up, but not until mid-season.
